One bad choice led to Zimmerman getting a busted nose and some bloody cuts on his head. He was told by authorities to not engage Trayvon Martin but he did anyway. Trayvon was fighting for his life against a man with a gun. He fought valiantly it looks like, before he was needlessly killed.

President Obama came out in favor of gay marriage officially today because there is little downside to doing so (except losing North Carolina [which now he will], and maybe Florida, Ohio and possibly Virginia). The public has transitioned to majority support, so the president came along. He won't invest any more political capital in the issue though - other than to tell black preachers to stop the hypocrisy. I would have counseled him to wait until after the election, but what's done is done. But it is a big Who Cares?
There are about 240 million marriage-age people in the United States (out of a population of 315 million) and in the past few years there have been about 57,000 legal gay marriages. So, 1 gay marriage for every 7.3 million Americans. Most of the gay people who really want to ape the straight world with a wedding and all that have already gone to the states that legalized it and done it. From now on, there will be a few thousand a year. If 10% of the population is gay then that is 31 million gay people and only 57,000 coupled up and wanted a marriage license. A more conservative estimate of 4% gays in the population mean 12.5 million. With only 57,000 gay weddings clearly only a tiny minority of a minority even wants this. There are about 2.2 million straight marriages a year and 1.2 million divorces. Gays who want a traditional marriage, want to adopt kids and basically live as straights annoy me. For gay male couples who split it used to be "get out" and that was that - now there will be legal wars and lawyers and child-custody and all of it. At least with lesbians who divorce there will be a contract to divvy up the cats.

Arrested at last. What is most important to consider about this case is that this Neighborhood Watch activist took it upon himself to play cop. You are supposed to watch and report, not engage. The 911 operator clearly ordered Zimmerman not to engage. He must do time to pay for the killing he committed and to send a message to other self-styled wannabe cops that you watch and report only - leave the engagement to the professionals.
Yes, there is racism in the world - always has been, always will be. In America, the more overt racism takes place in the South. A young black kid named Trayvon Martin was killed by a nerd vigilante neighborhood-watch type and now much of the political black community in America is making the case a cause célèbre, and the type of messaging has descended quickly into the ridiculous. Hoodies have become the emblem of protesting what is perceived as his wrongful death and the lack of motivation by the authorities to do anything about it. Hoodies are the favored attire of street gangsters, teenagers, snowboarders and cold people everywhere. They are not iconic representations of racism.
The main point of this case is being missed by everyone: we have in our midst - in every city and town - self-appointed nerds that fancy themselves citizen-law-enforcement. You've seen them - they drive the cars or motorcycles that look almost identical to official police vehicles and they dress in manner close to an official uniform - we beceme startled when we see them thinking they're a real cop and, hey, are we speeding? These nerd vigilantes crave attention and power and use this pathetic ruse to get it.
In the Trayvon Martin case a local person of this type in Florida, George Zimmerman, took it upon himself to play cop and followed Trayvon - whom he found suspicious - even when the 911 operator he was reporting the activity to told him not to. The whole idea of neighborhood watch is that you watch, then you call the actual authorities if there is a problem. Zimmerman crossed the line from observation and reporting into participation and it is for that reason that he must be held criminally liable for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Tawana did NOT tell the truth and there is more than meets the eye to Trayvon Martin, but the crime is the attitude and actions of the nerd-vigilante George Zimmerman and we need to turn a bright spotlight on these kind of people.

The US public was never in favor of a protracted engagement in Afghanistan - there is nothing to "win" there. Thousands of US lives lost, thousands of US soldiers maimed, billion$ in profits for greedy merchants of death machines, but America sullied its reputation and that of its military ("winning hearts and minds" what a joke in tribal Afghanistan), and severely harmed its economy through the folly that was the Afghan campaign. Protest erupted in Afghanistan once it was discovered that the US military was burning Korans. This is so bone-headed a whole slew of military commanders deserve to be fired and the soldiers under them discharged or reassigned. The political optics of this undermine years of any potential positive gains. Why were these "religious items" not carefully packaged if they were slated for destruction so that no one would even know what was burning? Why were we providing Korans to those in detention anyway? What kind of insider betrayed the knowledge of what was going on? If the Korans were being used to pass messages, why not confiscate them and give them new ones and store the old ones for analysis and eventual destruction off-site (out-of-country)? This kind of stupidity in unforgivable.
The states with the most self-declared "conservatives" also have the lowest education rates, highest obesity rates and the most reliance on government "handouts."
More scientific data showing that America's Red (conservative) Blue (progressive) divide is driven by the fear in which American conservatives live their lives. Red-staters rely more on government handouts which they say they despise and the richest blue states subsidize the most conservative red states. You have more hunters and death penalty inmates in red states - they like to kill things they don't like or understand. Red states want to keep out immigrants and want religion allowed in schools and government institutions and to ban abortion and homosexuality. The most educated populations are in blue states and blue cities. The overall take-away from this most recent study is that conservatives focus on the negative while progressives focus on the positive. An obvious conclusion, but backed up again by science. America's conservatives are not just narrow-minded, but fear-minded.
